Detection of Metallo-beta-lactamase producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Intensive care units

P. aeruginosa is a well-established nosocomial pathogen and MBL production in P. aeruginosa is associated with treatment failure, longer hospital stay and significant morbidity and mortality. Out of 11 MBL producing P. aeruginosa in this study 10 isolates displayed multidrug resistance. Imipenem disk diffusion test and combined disk test are simple cost-effective phenotypic tests for detection of MBL production in P. aeruginosa.

Multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter species from various clinical samples in a tertiary care hospital from South India

Acinetobacter species are emerging nosocomial pathogens, especially in critical care units. Authors report that a significant proportion of Acinetobacter infections in their hospital were multi-drug resistant and nosocomial in origin. Antibiotic susceptibility testing is critical in the treatment of infections caused by Acinetobacter, particularly in those with inadequate response to antibiotic therapy.

Comparing performance of Tabriz obstetrics and gynaecology hospitals managed as autonomous and budgetary units using Pabon Lasso method

Managerial differences can play a major role in the performance indicator of hospitals in the same environments. Managing hospitals according to a board of trustees can be used to improve hospital performance. Collaboration among hospitals in a region can lead to improvement in using available resources.

EDITORIAL

Education for practitioners and patients

The role of practitioner and patient education has morphed into a collaborative imperative upon which the wider effectiveness of evidence based practice rests. The process of and accessibility to education has not only been vastly facilitated by technology, it has led to an explosion of information for all. Despite of these colossal changes, ‘the gap between what we know and what we aim for persists.’ In reality this gap will never be closed. It will however continue to provide the impetus and the motivation for patient and practitioner alike to ever engage in the dialogue of education.

Obstetric practice in India

Obstetrics and gynaecology, including topics such as contraception, antenatal care, and maternal and neonatal health, are an important part of medical practice. In recent years there have been many studies examining aspects of this healthcare sector in India. This editorial examines some of the recently published research from this field, and country, with the aim of highlighting the existence and variety of the investigations that have been published on this topic. It is hoped that the review of these works will allow researchers and clinicians in all countries to reflect on the value of parochial research that can focus healthcare intervention on areas that necessitate further promotion or examination.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection causing myocardial infarction in an 18 year old man: a case report

Authors report the case of an 18-year-old man who presented to their institution with asymptomatic myocardial infarction secondary to a spontaneous dissection of the left anterior descending coronary artery. To press there are no specific guidelines to manage SCAD. Choice of treatment should be tailored to the clinical condition of each individual patient.
