Interactive CaringTVĀ® supporting elderly living at home

Elderly people are more likely to be able to remain in their own homes when they participate in online and interactive programmes that support health and well-being. User-friendly technology can support and activate coping by the elderly in their own homes as this type of interaction and participation may empower them. Action research and user-driven methods are congruent with health research, and enable the development of new services in health care.

Self-Reported Bowel Screening Rates in Older Australians and the Implications for Public Health Screening Programs

This study considers self-reported bowel screening behaviour. Analyses show that when colonoscopy and FOBT usage are combined, the proportion of individuals up-to-date with bowel screening, according to NH&MRC guidelines, is likely higher than that estimated by the NBCSP Steps should be taken to improve data collection around screening behaviour in programs like the NBCSP.

Prevalence of Candida co-infection in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis

Data reported in this study imply the need for screening pulmonary tuberculosis patients for Candida co-infection, especially in case of patients with inadequate response to anti-tubercular therapy. Anti-fungal sensitivity test may be valuable in case of non-albicans Candida species.

A case report of Melioidosis in a Diabetic patient in a Union Territory

Melioidosis is common in South East Asia, Australia and Japan. However, it is largely under reported in India. Blood and pus cultures remain the mainstay of diagnosis of this condition. In this patient Burkholderia pseudomallei was isolated from both blood culture and bone marrow. The isolate was susceptible to ceftazidime. Bone marrow culture may be a useful diagnostic tool in blood culture negative patients with melioidosis.Ceftazidime can still be considered as the drug of choice for treatment of melioidosis.

BRIEF REPORT

Electronic discharge summary driving advice: current practice and future directions

Stroke survivors are frequently keen to resume driving. However, in this study, authors have shown that driving advice is omitted from the majority of electronic discharge summaries. This has important medical, ethical, and societal implications. Moreover, it highlights a striking gap in current clinical practice. The simple measure we have proposed, if adopted widely, could reduce the risk of unfit patients resuming driving, improve continuity of care, and enhance communication between healthcare providers.

CASE STUDY

Triple falx cerebelli associated with two aberrant venous sinuses in the floor of posterior cranial fossa

The complex dural-venous variation reported in this case is seldom reported in the literature. Awareness of such variation is important for neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists as these could be a potential source of haemorrhage during suboccipital approaches, or may lead to erroneous interpretation during imaging of the posterior cranial fossa.
