Western Australian Coastal Shark Bites: A risk assessment |
Personal risk of shark bite in Western Australia has not been estimated previously. Shark bite risk is highly correlated with the seasonal presence of migrating humpback whales and varies with choice of water activity, season, and location by almost three orders of magnitude. Individuals and government may use the risk estimates presented to make better-informed choices about water activities and how to mitigate shark bite risk. Picture by Freedigitalphotos

General practice and primary care |
Primary care practitioners are typically the first point of contact in the Australian healthcare system. Healthcare delivery in Australia is changing as is the role of general practitioners and general practice. Innovations such as multi-professional healthcare teams, technological innovations, and procedural reform are needed to achieve results. Picture by Freedigitalphotos

The current status of medical thromboprophylaxis in Australia |
In Australia there are two published guidelines for medical thromboprophylaxis (MT), but the precise criteria for giving this treatment are uncertain. The commentary critiques the current Australian guidelines and suggests improvements to MT. Criteria for MT should be restricted to risk factors of reasonable weight to balance bleeding risk, and by deleting “increasing age”, because its reputation as an independent risk factor for thrombosis in medical patients has not been verified. Carriage Prevalence of Carbapenem Resistant Enterobacteriaceae in Stool Samples: A Surveillance Study |
This study investigates the prevalence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) in stool samples from an urban area of India. Active surveillance helps prevent the spread of drug-resistant strains as gastrointestinal carriers may serve as the reservoir for cross-transmission in the healthcare setting, in immunocompromised patients, and in the community. Rosai-Dorfman disease: A rare clinico-pathological presentation |
Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare, benign disease that presents with massive painless cervical lymphadenopathy. It affects younger people. This case is an unusual and rare clinical presentation of cervical lymphadenopathy and nasal mass diagnosed as RDD with cyto-histopathological correlation. Clinicians and pathologists should be aware of RDD in making a differential diagnosis of cervical lymphadenopathy. Picture by Freedigitalphotos

Shprintzen-Goldberg syndrome presenting as umbilical hernia in an Indian child |
Shprintzen-Goldberg syndrome is a rare connective tissue disorder characterised by craniosynostosis and marfanoid features. Only 60 cases have been reported in the literature since it was first described in 1981 by Sugarman and Vogel. This case presents an Indian child presenting with an umbilical hernia since birth and with delayed cognitive and developmental milestones. Patients presenting with a congenital umbilical hernia, along with features of craniosynostosis and marfanoid habitus should be considered for a Shprintzen-Goldberg syndrome diagnosis. Other associated conditions such as cardiac and musculoskeletal should not be missed. Picture by Freedigitalphotos
