Social Media and the Future of Medicine

Given shifting demographics and greater access to health information, a new approach is needed regarding how we think about delivering health care to the community. In this editorial, a medical practitioner and an industrial design practitioner challenge the status quo of how health care is conceived, developed, and delivered.

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is rising in Australia and there is an increasing need for new glucose-lowering drugs with benefits beyond glucose control. With the approval of dapagliflozin and canagliflozin in Europe, the US, and Australia, these drugs have the potential to become an important treatment option for effective and well-tolerated management of diabetes.

CLINICAL AUDIT

A Study of Acute Otitis Externa at Wellington Hospital 2007-2011

The epidemiology and management of acute otitis externa in New Zealand has not previously been described. This may be due to local population idiosyncrasies such as swimming habits, bacterial colonisation, health-seeking behaviours; prescribing practices of health practitioners; and pharmaceutical subsidies for available antimicrobials. Primary and emergency physicians can be better informed in making decisions to treat or refer patients.

An unorthodox innervation of the gluteus maximus muscle and other associated variations: A case report

This case study reports the co-existence of unusual variations in the gluteal region, which warrant attention as this region is the area of frequent surgical intervention. The described variations may lead to adverse effects such as nerve injury during deep intramuscular injections in the gluteal region, failed sciatic nerve block in anaesthesia, and injury during posterior hip operations.
