Reviewing for the AMJ

The AMJ seeks to serve authors, especially those who are relatively new to authorship. The process of peer review has been criticised in the literature and is very probably flawed. However if reviewers can be guided to work with authors rather than against them we believe the partnership will be fruitful for all concerned. Here I have offered some reflections on the review process. See our new reviewer's form here.

The Battle Against Plagiarism

The combination of the freely available software can be a deterrent to plagiarism and is a positive step forward in making detection easier for authors, editors and reviewers. Journals should make use of this freely available software to enforce ethical standards.

RESEARCH

Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis in Southern India

A high level of coverage (>85%) in endemic areas is essential for achieving elimination of lymphatic filariasis. The major challenge with Mass Drug Administration (MDA) programmes is to sustain this high coverage for a period of at least five years. However, the main limitation of this programme is a comparatively poor coverage of drug distribution and consumption. Hence, the need of the hour is to improve drug delivery strategies. This study suggests that the coverage of 83% in this sample is much lower than the national goal of 90% coverage.

Seasonal Variation of Acute Urolithiasis

This study suggests an association between the presentation of urolithiasis and season. It is proposed that a lag period exists between exposure to warmer and drier periods and presentations of renal colic. Therefore, healthcare prevention and dynamic healthcare planning should be instigated to reduce socioeconomic burden secondary to sharply increases of stone case presentations due to a predictable seasonal variation pattern.

REVIEW

Seafood: Nutritional Gold for Seniors

The authors claim that there is strong evidence supporting regular seafood consumption (particularly fish) as protective against all cause mortality. They also conclude that there is significant evidence supporting a diet rich in seafood for seniors for protection and/or management of aged-related conditions such as coronary heart disease, stroke, arthritis and colorectal cancer.
