Peer Review Process

The AMJ operates a policy of single-blind peer review. This means that the identity of the reviewers may be anonymous, but the authors name and affiliation are disclosed.

Submitted manuscripts will be sent to a senior editor and then to two or more peer reviewers, unless they are either out of scope or below threshold for the journal, or the presentation or written English is of an unacceptably low standard. They will generally be reviewed by two experts on atleast two rounds with the aim of reaching a decision as soon as possible, preferably within 2 weeks on each occasion. Statistical reviewers are also used where required. Reviewers are asked to declare any competing interests and have to agree to open peer review. The reviewers have agreed to have their names listed on the editorial team page under the 'about' tab.

Reviewers are asked whether the manuscript is scientifically sound and coherent, how interesting it is and whether the quality of the writing is acceptable. A copy of the reviewers form is available here. Where possible, the final decision is made on the basis that the peer reviewers are in accordance with one another, or that at least there is no strong dissenting view. In cases where there is strong disagreement either among peer reviewers or between the authors and peer reviewers, advice is sought from a member of the journal's Editorial Board. The journal allows a maximum of two revisions of any manuscript. All appeals should be directed to the Editor. The ultimate responsibility for editorial decisions lies with the Editor-in-Chief.

The following time table applies:

1. Initial review by Senior Editor- 2 weeks 

2. First round review by selected reviewers- 2 weeks with authors given 6 weeks to respond

3. Second round review by the same reviewers- 2 weeks with authors given 6 weeks to respond

4. Final review by editorial board- 2 weeks with authors given 2 weeks to respond.

 Therefore the speed of publication depends on how quickly authors respond to reviewers' comments. It can take as little as 6 weeks or as long as 22 weeks.

Once an article is accepted, it is published in AMJ on a schedule to be determined by the  editor. The article once copy edited and proof read will then be freely available through the AMJ website.

In submitting a research article ('article') published by the AMJ I certify that:

1. I am authorized by my co-authors to enter into these arrangements.

a.      the article is original, has not been formally published in any other peer-reviewed journal, is not under consideration by any other journal and does not infringe any existing copyright or any other third party rights;

d.      I/we have taken due care to ensure the integrity of the article. To my/our - and currently accepted scientific - knowledge all statements contained in it purporting to be facts are true and any formula or instruction contained in the article will not, if followed accurately, cause any injury, illness or damage to the user.
